Colonel (大佐 Kāneru) is the founder and leader of the Golan organization, formed from the Red Berets. He is a supporting antagonist of Hokuto no Ken series and the main antagonist of the Golan Arc.
The Colonel was a master of different killing techniques, such as deadly boomerangs and the Nanto Muon Ken style. It was also stated by Mad Sarge that he possessed ESP (extrasensory perception), but in fact it was the ability to read the subtle muscle and eye movements of his opponent. Kenshiro detected this before defeating him.
Biography
Pre-Apocalypse
The Colonel was a commander of the Red Berets who served his country proudly. When he visited his general to give his debriefing, he saw his generals and peers partaking in a hedonistic party and mocking the Colonel that nuclear bombs were needed to solve their country's problems. This disillusioned the Colonel's faith in his country.
Soon, the country took part in a nuclear apocalypse that engulfed the world and the general was part of the casualty. The Red Berets survival of the nuclear fallout led the Colonel to believe that he and his men were 'chosen by God'. He soon founded the Golan organization with the Red Berets and went on to control part of the wasteland.
Post Apocalypse
The Colonel aimed to repopulate the world with his Golan organization on top as a way to correct the mistakes of the old world. However, Golan soon committed ruthless actions such as kidnapping innocents to build a new community, executing any resistance and enacting ruthless training on new recruits.
The Golan organization soon faced Kenshiro, master of Hokuto Shinken, who intervened because Lin was spotted as part of Golan's prisoners, enacting her rescue and killing the Golan escort. After rescuing Lin, he headed to God's Land to destroy Golan. Here the Colonel would meet his end, when Kenshiro took out his eyesight using the pressure point Dōmei before destroying him with the Hokuto Kaikotsu Ken technique, causing his skeleton to explode from his flesh.
TV series
In the TV series, due to political reasons, the Colonel and his army's backstory was removed and they were rewritten as fanatical worshipers of Shin. In an anime-only flashback, Colonel also killed a gang of 10 former professional wrestlers hired to kill him by bartender Johnny.
In the anime, Kenshiro's gang had a scuffle with the captain and the Golan men challenged him, only for the captain to be killed.
1986 movie
- In the 1986 movie, the Colonel has a short cameo as one of Shin's security officers. He is murdered by his master when focusing on Raoh's invasion instead of searching for the escaped Yuria.

Trivia
- Colonel bears a resemblance to Rolento, a soldier who appeared in the Final Fight series, as well as the Street Fighter series. Its possible that Rolento's design was based on the Colonel.
- Black, the Final Fight 3 final boss, also bears a resemblance to the Colonel, while having a shirt ripping action, just like Kenshiro.
- Heidern from The King of Fighters also resembles the Colonel, although that resemblance has grown less over the years. Notably, Heidern slashes with his fingertips, just like the Colonel.
- It is possible that he lost his right eye after the apocalypse as he still retained both eyes pre-nuclear war.
- He is the only character with a close link to the source of the nuclear war.
